This study, more comprehensive than the title gives credit for, begins with a brief description of wartime Columbia, then proceeds to the evacuation of Columbia, the occupation by Sherman's army, the fires of February 17-18, 1865 and the extent of the damage. The author closes with an assessment of responsibility.
