In the first half of the nineteenth century, radicals all over Europe and America began to conceive of a 'New Moral World', and struggled to create their own utopias. In Britain, the inspiration of the French Revolution and the impact of industrial capitalism led to the establishment of a movement by the Utopian Socialist, Robert Owen, whose vision of a communal society, where men and women of all classes would live in equality and harmony, captured the imaginations of thousands for nearly a quarter of a century.
